Maritime Human Element Centre
(MHEC)
About MHEC
The Maritime Human Element Centre (MHEC) is involved in various research and innovation activities related to the human element in the marine and maritime sectors, aiming at promoting career opportunities and upskilling people in the blue economy, as well as addressing challenges faced by those at sea.
MHEC covers various areas of the human element in the marine and maritime sectors including:
- Occupational Psychology
- Organisational Behavior
- Ergonomics and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI)
- Safety Science
- Business and Management Theory
- Health Sciences
- Legal Aspects
- Sociology and Anthropology
It aims to bridge the gap between educational options available in relation to the marine and maritime sectors and labour market needs, especially in relation to technological developments and innovation, by building on the “Mentor/Blue Career Centre” and “Sea of Experience” projects. Furthermore, it seeks to strengthen cooperation between industry, academia and public authorities, encourage mobility of students, teachers and professionals and raise public awareness about blue professions through blue career fairs, ocean literacy programs and other events in collaboration with other CMMI centres, such as the “Blue Schools” and “Blue Youth Camps”. It also plans to examine aspects relating to the operators of the remote-controlled or autonomous vessels of the future.
MHEC is also responsible for coordinating the ‘Our Sea’ enabler of CMMI.
