CMMI’s programme in support of Ocean Literacy

Oceans and seas cover more than 70% of the Earth’s surface and directly affect the climate, history, and economy of many countries as well as the health and diet of their citizens. They are therefore inextricably linked to the history of mankind.

At the European level, over 40% of the EU’s population lives near the coast, while coastal areas represent over 40% of European territory. In addition, 75% of the EU’s external trade takes place by sea, with European shipowners controlling almost 40% of the world’s merchant fleet. In addition, the Blue Economy – in the maritime and shipping sectors – employs about 5 million people and contributes around € 500 billion per year to the EU GDP. It is also worth noting that the seas that surround or penetrate the European continent have played a major role in shaping the current state and way of life in Europe and remain perhaps the most important factors of geostrategic, geopolitical and geoeconomic power.

Responding to societal needs and policy priorities, the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute plans and implements a series of local and national actions related to ocean literacy in collaboration with local and national stakeholders and with initiatives such as the Creation of “Blue Schools” with integrated educational programs and training cycles, organisation of competitions for Primary Schools, organisation of events and educational activities.

Through such initiatives and actions, the Institute aims to inform, raise awareness, and mobilise society, and especially children and young people, on the importance of the sea and the protection of the marine environment.
