About MCHC

Marine cultural heritage includes tangible and intangible testimonies of the people’s connection with the sea through the ages. Its study and protection are vital in understanding and strengthening past and present cultural identities, but also in opening new paths towards the future.

The CMMI Marine Cultural Heritage Centre (MCHC) aims at promoting and enhancing knowledge of Cyprus’ marine cultural heritage. To this end, the MCHC contributes to the research, protection and preservation of tangible marine heritage, that is underwater and coastal archaeological and contemporary cultural sites. At the same time, the MCHC is also engaged in activities towards the advancement of the island’s intangible marine heritage, such as oral history, artistic and linguistic expressions, local skills, and traditional and historical knowledge related to the marine and maritime sectors.

Aiming to promote marine heritage appreciation, MCHC is also involved in outreach and social impact events such as the organisation of seminars and workshops, the development of marine-oriented exhibitions and the establishment of underwater museums. Last but not least, the Centre seeks to raise awareness of the value of marine cultural heritage for the contemporary society and to enhance research in the field through its involvement in the marine sciences.
