About MOC

The CMMI Marine Observation Centre (MOC) aims at performing essential and long-term multidisciplinary observations in the marine environment, in order to improve the understanding of the dynamics and changes of marine and coastal ecosystems. This will initially be done by developing, deploying, and optimising cost-effective, innovative, and integrated observation systems e.g., buoys or seabed observatories under a self-funded network called “Proteus” while the ultimate aim is the development of the “Cyprus Marine Observation Network” as a Critical National Infrastructure.

This will consist of a network of sensors at sea and in the coastal area, in combination with measurements from other sources e.g., Research Vessels, Ferry-boxes, Gliders, USVs etc. The Cyprus Marine Observation Network will cover the sea areas of the Republic of Cyprus and the data will be available to a wide community, including stakeholders with national responsibilities.

Specifically, MOC’s Proteus network is being developed along four directions:

PLAT – Observation platforms and instruments, that will observe metocean variables
MCC – Mission Control Centre, that will monitor PLAT
MDC – Marine Data Centre, that will acquire, process, store, and disseminate metocean data
OCM – Nearshore/Littoral Ocean Circulation Model, that will assimilate data acquired and will provide a real time assessment of oceanographic conditions in Cypriot waters
