Building Cyprus’ Marine Observation Network

In-situ observations in the marine environment, related to physical, biochemical, ecological, and geological parameters, provide critical information about its state and changes that take place, and are pivotal for improving weather predictions, predicting extreme events, and addressing threats such as climate change, pollution, and alien species. Moreover, long-term in situ ocean observations can be considered valuable marine knowledge since they are required to support climate and environmental policies, stimulate economic growth, and develop sound mitigation and adaptation strategies to potential hazards (both natural and man-made) impacts. Imperatives such as protecting ecosystems, coasts, and biodiversity, and sustainably managing marine resources can only be addressed when the relevant information is accessible. From this information, direct and indirect benefits can be delivered to society by creating products and services that assist governance and support decision-making and policy-making. In this context, there is a growing demand for timely and reliable in situ ocean observations that will provide the common ground for researchers, innovators, government, policymakers, businesses, and citizens to act cooperatively for the restoration of our ocean and waters.

Proteus is the CMMI Research and Innovation Mission Unit that aims to initiate a prototype Marine Observation Network also known as (CyMON) by developing models and products and providing services while seeking opportunities to add new multidisciplinary observing assets. Proteus links observations and related information to applications of societal benefit through a common monitoring strategy around the Republic of Cyprus. This initiative fully aligns with European policies and directives by providing marine environmental datasets as a solid science base to respond to societal challenges and needs. This network will also support the delivery of high-quality, reliable oceanographic data to European data depositories.

CMMI’s vision for the Cyprus Marine Observation Network (CyMON) is to become the National Critical Infrastructure of the Republic of Cyprus for acquiring and sharing marine data. To achieve that it must foster collaborations with stakeholders from the public, private and academic sectors.
