Leonidas Ioannou is a Junior Data Scientist at the Maritime Digitalisation Centre (MDigiC) of the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI). He holds a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Statistics and a master’s degree in Data Science and Statistics from the University of Cyprus. During his academic studies, he gained practical experience by completing two internships. The first was at the University of Cyprus, where he focused on performance loss modelling of Photovoltaics systems with emphasis on time series analysis. The second internship was at a research company where he developed a data management system for data sourced from smartwatches that were used as part of ongoing cancer research work.

At CMMI, he is involved in the development of marine spatial planning and other decision support tools based on Monte Carlo Sampling and Particle Filtering methods. These tools integrate state-of-the-art models within ecosystem-based management for the benefit of the Blue Economy sector.
