Project challenge & objective:

With the economic recession behind it, the economy of Cyprus is expanding at a rate comparable to that of the global economy. Research, technology development, and innovation (RTDI) are key factors in the economic competitiveness and sustainability of Cyprus, and Europe. RTDI has been receiving significant attention by policymakers and entrepreneurs in Cyprus over the last decade. RTDI is crucial for the development of a sustainable knowledge-based economy, and a new economic development model with innovation-led growth at its core; this is reflected in the tendency for a growing distribution of resources towards activities supporting this change.

The EU-funded CMMI – MaRITeC-X Teaming project establishes a centre of excellence in Cyprus to promote high-level research, technology development and foster innovation operations in the marine and maritime sector. Called the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI), it will play a key role in the country’s economic and social transformation.

Role of CMMI:

CMMI is the main beneficiary of the project, being involved in all work packages and activities. CMMI’s vision – and the impact that the project aims at creating – is to drive sustainable Blue Growth by addressing the needs of industry and society within the spectrum of the marine and maritime sectors. As part of the project, CMMI has established ten Research and Innovation Centres that are involved in marine observation, marine robotics, maritime digitalisation, maritime engineering, marine and coastal ecosystems, the maritime human element, marine cultural heritage, marine and maritime policies and regional cooperation and underwater and seabed technologies.

Consortium:

CMMI was established as a “Center of Excellence” in Marine and Maritime Research, Technology Development & Innovation (RTDI) and has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement No. 857586 and matching  funding from the Government of the Republic of Cyprus.
