Beyond Onshore Electrification: A bioCNG Floating Power Plant for Maritime Decarbonization

Key Information

Total project cost: € 845,845.20

Total project funding: € 600,000.00

Duration: 01/01/2023 – 31/12/2024

Project challenge & objective:

bioCNG-to-Cold Ironing envisages to provide green electrification of ships either at berth or anchorage areas. A first of its kind floating power plant driven by renewable energy is to be developed aiming to tackle the principles of circular economy. A barge will be designed and build to carry a marine engine genset powered by compressed biomethane that will act as cold ironing either at berth or in an anchorage area. Thus bioCNG-to-Cold Ironing will offer a green solution for cold-ironing as set by European directives and international legislations.

Role of CMMI:

CMMI is cantered on the development of a real time IoT performance monitoring system as well as the dissemination and communication activities (publishing to open access articles, conference participation etc.). CMMI will also contribute to satisfying the reporting and performance indicators set by the Research and Innovation Foundation.

Consortium:

The Project CODEVELOP-GT/0322/0014 is funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU, through the Research and Innovation Foundation
