The student competition for primary schools in the Larnaca District for the promotion of the reef in the area of Voroklini with the title “Give a Name to a Reef” was successfully completed. The main organisers of the competition were the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute, the Cyprus Youth Board, the Larnaca Tourism Board and Geoimaging. The initiative was under the auspices of the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research and was sponsored by Petrolina.
The competition gave the children of the province the opportunity to be actively involved in naming a natural reef, which is located in the sea area of Larnaca and specifically in the area of Voroklini. The reef, which has acquired the name “DORIDA” through this Competition, will be a new reference point and point of attraction for those involved in diving and beyond.
9 schools responded to the competition process with 17 proposals from students of grades three to six of the primary schools of Larnaca District. Considering the special circumstances of the last months due to the pandemic, we would like to congratulate all participants, teachers and students for the immediate response and active participation. The teamwork and creative involvement of teachers and children were demonstrated through imaginative suggestions and accompanying documentation. The connection of the new generation with its ancient roots that was showcased was touching and beyond expectations. Congratulations to all! It is particularly encouraging for us to continue expanding this Ocean Literacy action by further enriching it and making an annual, island-wide event.
The jury, by a majority, selected three of the proposals that stood out for the naming and narrative originality and their connection with historical and cultural features of the landscape. The award ceremony took place during the Closing Ceremony of the European Maritime Day events on 21 June 2021 in Europe Square in a heartfelt ceremony. Prizes and honorary diplomas were awarded to school principals and students of the winning classes by the President of the Parliament, the Mayor of Larnaca and the Director of the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research.
