European Maritime Day 2023 in Cyprus
The European Maritime Day (EMD) was established by the European Commission in 2008 and it acts as the annual EU meeting point on maritime affairs and sustainable blue growth and the place where ‘Ocean Leaders Meet’. It is also a public event reaching out to young people and citizens across Europe through local events under the ‘EMD in my Country’ label.
EMD has enabled many project partnerships and co-operations among stakeholders and it has also contributed to getting the need for sustainable management of ocean resources higher on the EU’s agenda.
Stakeholders find the EMD a great opportunity to touch base with strategic partners, make new contacts and network, get visibility for their projects, ideas, activities and achievements, gain new insights into the evolving EU policy and funding landscape and provide input into European Maritime Policy formulation.
The main event for the “European Maritime Day” will be celebrated this year in Brest, France, on 24-25 May 2023.
Every year, the central event will be accompanied by a multitude of parallel events in various European countries aimed at European citizens and especially young people, to inform and educate them in a creative way about the interaction and interdependence of people with the sea.
The “EMD in my Country” is a key part of the ever-greater effort to raise awareness and mobilise for the protection and restoration of the sea as well as highlighting the importance and opportunities it offers for the societies and the economies of Europe. The related events are becoming increasingly popular, attracting thousands of participants every year across the EU.
In 2022, the events for the “EMD in my Country” were a great success. 630 events were organised across the EU. The events in Cyprus took place for the 2nd year in Larnaka as an initiative by the Cyprus Maritime and Maritime Institute (CMMI), after the successful – despite the challenges of the pandemic – the first event in Cyprus in 2021!
As part of this year’s organisation of the “European Maritime Day (EMD) in Cyprus” the events have been extended – in collaboration with a large number of local organisations – to include the coastal municipalities of Agia Napa, Larnaka, Limassol and Paphos and will be held from 18 to 21 May 2023.
